The actor has met director Steven Soderbergh about starring as Napoleon Solo in film about two crime-fighting secret agents, Hollywood Reporter mentioned.
Even now in early growth, it can be imagined the film will retain its 1960s setting.
The original Television series, which ran from 1964 to 1968, starred Robert Vaughn inside the lead role of Napoleon Solo.
British actor David McCallum also starred as Illya Illya Kuryakin, functioning as part of the United Network Command for Law Enforcement, fighting the evil organisation Thrush.
Clooney is often a long-time collaborator with Soderbergh, the pair functioning together previously on films including From Sight, the Ocean's Eleven series and Syriana, for which Clooney won an Oscar.
But with Soderbergh and Clooney active with their own projects, it may be a while earlier than the venture comes together.
Soderbergh is shooting thriller Contagion starring Matt Damon, Jude Law and Marion Cotillard, though Clooney is functioning on the Ides of March which he is directing and starring in alongside Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti and Marisa Tomei.
George Clooney's The American was top rated film on the North American box office in excess of a lacklustre Labour Day weekend.
The film, in which the US star plays an assassin hiding out in Europe, designed $13m (?eight.4m) among Friday and Sunday, according to studio estimates.
That was adequate to knock crime thriller Takers, very last week's primary movie, down to second put.
But its chart-topping performance did not end the summer season movie going time ending on a traditionally weak note.
Takers' second weekend takings of $11.5m (?7.5m) put it just forward of Machete, which opened in 3rd put with an $11.3m (?7.4m) haul.
Starring Danny Trejo, the violent action thriller was inspired by a spoof trailer that appeared inside the 2007 element Grindhouse.
The top rated 5 was finished by horror film The Final Exorcism and romantic comedy Going the distance.
The latter, which stars Drew Barrymore and Justin Prolonged like a couple trying a long distance relationship, designed its debut at 5 using a $6.9m (?four.5m) three-day tally.
